After a summer of preparations and recruiting members, Noesis hosted its first official club night last Wednesday. The night started with a casual walk in, where people could sign up for the tournament and wait before the lecture, given by International Master Herman Grooten, would start. Even though we knew quite some people had signed up for the evening, the long queue in front of the Luna lecture hall confirmed todays activity would become something special. In the end, over 70 people joined the tournament.
Our chairman, Joost van Engelen, opened the night with a small talk on our association and followed up by introducing IM Herman Grooten.
Herman showed some interesting positions from correspondent chess dating back to the 18th century. The very last game included the dubious promotion of a pawn to a king.
Some people had been lucky enough to challenge Herman in a blitz game with odds (5+0 vs 2+0). Even though Herman faced some though players, none came out on top.
We ended the night with a casual rapid tournament (8+0) with 5 rounds in total. Some music was playing and Hubble Cafe was close enough to quench our thirsts. There were some special prices for places 1 (Chiel Koster), 21 (Jasper Gregoire) and 41 (Phil Geers).
Have a look at the final results. Congratulations to everyone who participated, see you again soon!
